Overview

The tool "Color Picker From Image" lets you find the HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK color codes of an image pixel when you move the mouse over the image.

Use the button to select and load your image, and then hover your mouse over the image. You will see a magnified view of the image area, and the corresponding color codes in different formats. You can copy the color codes by clicking on them.

Color Codes

The ArtyClick Color Name Finder can be used to find color names from the hex or RGB color codes. The following color codes are supported:

  • RGB: Additive (digital) color model in which Red, Green, and Blue lights are added together to reproduce colors. Each value ranges between 0 and 255.

  • HEX: Hexadecimal color model consisting of six digits that represent the red, green and blue components of the color (2 digits per component). Each component ranges between 00 and FF.

  • HSL: Additive cylindrical-coordinate representation of the RGB color model using the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness components. The Hue value ranges between 0 and 360, and the Saturation and Lightness values range between 0 and 100.

  • CMYK: Subtractive (process) color model used in color printing (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key - black). Each value ranges between 0 and 100.

Color Names

Color names are provided by the comprehensive ArtyClick Color Dictionary with over 1,700 most common color names.

A way to measure how close the chosen color is to the closest color in the dictionary is the color match score. This score goes from 0% to 100%, where 100% means the colors are exactly the same; because of the large number of colors in the color dictionary, most scores are above 95%.

Color Hue

Each color belongs to one of the 8 basic hues:

  • Red

  • Orange

  • Yellow

  • Green

  • Cyan (turquoise or aqua)

  • Blue

  • Purple (violet)

  • Magenta (bright pink)

A complex hue can be expressed as a combination of two hues, where one is the main hue and the other is the secondary hue. For instance, "orangy red" means a hue that is mostly red with some orange (red is the main hue and orange is the secondary hue).

Only pairs of adjacent hues (as listed above) are valid. For example, there is a "blueish purple", but there is no "yellowish purple".

There are 2 hues that are sometimes skipped or omitted when expressing complex hues: cyan and magenta. For example, instead of using cyan, the term "greenish blue" may be preferred.
